A Trio of Water Views – A visit to <a href="https://www.volusia.org/services/public-works/coastal-division/coastal-parks/smyrna-dunes-park.stml" target="_blank">Smyrna Dunes Par</a>k delivers breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean, Indian River, and Ponce de Leon Inlet. The park has two miles of wide, elevated, handicapped accessible boardwalk, along with access to the beach.
Florida’s Tallest Lighthouse – Climb 175 feet for a spectacular, sweeping view of coastal Florida. The world-famous <a href="https://www.ponceinlet.org/" target="_blank">Ponce Inlet Lighthouse</a> was constructed in 1887 and declared a National Historic Landmark in 1998. The site includes all the original structures, including the homes of the principal keeper and first and second assistant keepers. On January 17, the lighthouse hosts its monthly “Climb to the Moon.” Get spectacular views of the sunset and full moon, along with a private tour with a lighthouse keeper.
NASCAR’s Prestigious Track – The <a href="https://www.daytonainternationalspeedway.com/" target="_blank">Daytona International Speedway</a>, which is just is 15 miles from New Smyrna Beach, is an iconic track that hosts the internationally known Daytona 500. A track tour includes a: visit to the start/finish line; close-up view of the pit stalls; photos in Gatorade Victory Lane; stunning view of the trioval and infield; and access to the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America. For those who’d like to see racing in person at the track, the American Historic Racing Motorcycle Association's Classic MotoFest will be held January 7-9, 2022.

NOLA Curiosities – The neighborhood of the French Quarter was the original city of New Orleans established by the French to control commerce on the Mississippi River. Today, it’s the epicenter for activities and eccentricities. Start with the curiosities of <a href="https://www.neworleans.com/listing/jackson-square/32150/" target="_blank">Jackson Square</a> that include unusual street artists, fortune tellers, and brass bands. Visit the 200-year-old Jean Lafitte’s Old Absinthe House which became famous in the 19th century for its absinthe frappe – a mixture of absinthe and sugar water – and the popular legend that pirate Jean Lafitte met with Andrew Jackson at the establishment. Finally, it’s not a sure thing but jazz funerals are still held. Catching one is just by luck since they’re typically conducted only after the death of a significant resident or musician.
Ghost Tours – New Orleans is home to two well-known women of mystery. Marie Laveau was a powerful voodoo priestess from the 19th century and Anne Rice is the best-selling author who wrote the Vampire Chronicles series. Set fears aside and book a nighttime walking tour that shares the city’s “dark side” and takes visitors to above-ground cemeteries, haunted locations, and voodoo shrines.
Boiled Crawfish – Whatever name you use – crayfish, crawfish, crawdads, or mudbugs – the crustaceans are synonymous with New Orleans. Crawfish are in season from January through July and can be served boiled, sauteed, baked, or fried. However, locals insist boiled is the best. Crawfish boils abound throughout New Orleans so get courageous and make a reservation.
Swamp Tours – Explore the watery world of Louisiana’s swamps and bayous aboard an airboat, skiff, or kayak. Travel through channels edged by cypress trees dripping with Spanish moss and learn how the waterways still provide a living for locals. See alligators, nutria, wild hogs, and other wildlife.

Spelunking – At 180 feet below ground, <a href="https://naturalbridgecaverns.com/" target="_blank">Natural Bridge Caverns</a> is Texas’ largest show cave with dramatic stalagmites, stalactites, flowstones, chandeliers, and soda straws formed by minerals in water drops. For the bold, a Discovery Adventure Tour delivers an “off trail” experience in an undeveloped section of the cave. Gear is provided but be prepared to get muddy while crawling, wiggling, and climbing to explore deep sections of the cave. For those who’d like a more predictable visit, a walking path tour is available.
Craft Breweries – Due to its German heritage, New Braunfels has a long history of brewing that includes the original New Braunfels Brewing Company built on the banks of the Comal River in 1847 by Julius Rennert. Three exceptional craft breweries include a reborn New Braunfels Brewing Company, Faust Hotel & Brewing Company, and Guadalupe Brewing Company – all of which are on the <a href="http://hillcountrycraftbeertrail.com/" target="_blank">Craft Beer Trail</a> that winds through Texas Hill Country. To be safe and responsible, book a spot on a trail shuttle bus.
Country Music – <a href="https://gruenehall.com/" target="_blank">Gruene Hall </a>is the place to embrace country music. Lyle Lovett, Hal Ketchum, Lucinda Williams, and many other legends have played at this historic honky-tonk. Built in 1878, it’s the state’s oldest continually operating dance hall and hasn’t changed much since its early days.

Water Hiking – <a href="https://www.kanarrafalls.com/" target="_blank">Kanarra Falls</a>, which is approximately 10 miles from New Harmony, is a spectacular adventure trek that requires stamina, agility, and surefootedness and, in return, delivers rushing waterfalls in red rock slot canyons. The canyoneering hike includes walking through and along a stream bed, climbing a 15-foot-ladder, and scaling a large boulder. All the effort is worth it to see a natural water slide and pool and two sets of waterfalls in slot canyons. Advance tickets are required, winter hours are limited, and cold weather gear (including neoprene socks) are a must.
Double Arch Alcove – Located in the Kolob Canyons section of <a href="https://www.budgettravel.com/places/169415/zion-national-park" target="_blank">Zion National Park</a>, the <a href="https://www.nps.gov/zion/planyourvisit/kolob-canyons-wilderness-hiking-trails.htm" target="_blank">Taylor Creek Trail</a> is a five-mile roundtrip hike up a “finger” canyon that leads to Double Arch Alcove. The cave-like formation features a palette of beautifully colored streaks thanks to water that seeps through the porous Navajo sandstone. The trail also includes two historic cabins from the 1903’s before the Kolob area became part of Zion. Kolob Canyons is smaller than Zion Canyon but that also means it’s not as busy.
Rugged Horseback Riding – Experience the beauty of southern Utah on horseback. Book a ride that ranges from 1 ½ hours to six. The pace and scenery of the rides can vary from a demanding ride in the steep and rugged Zion Mountain country to a more leisurely trip through the valley to admire the peaks from below.

Many of us may be feeling the itch to travel after staying home for almost a year as we continue living through a pandemic. When it is safe to travel again, it’s possible that our travel priorities have shifted. Maybe you prefer to spend more time outdoors. If you're wanting to get out more in nature and visit specific parks or recreation areas, you’re going to need to do some extra planning. Several U.S. parks require entering and winning a lottery to have the opportunity to visit, such as reaching the summit of Half Dome or rafting down the San Juan River. Implementing a lottery is one way to minimize human impact on fragile ecosystems by reducing crowds and traffic. 
Please make sure you check for any COVID-19 pandemic restrictions before you plan or depart on any trip. 
<h1>San Juan River, Utah 
</h1>
Floating or rafting down the San Juan River in southeast Utah may be high on your list, especially if you want to traverse through splendid red rock canyons full of history and wildlife. A permit is required between Montezuma Creek and Clay Hills Crossing, comprising 102 miles of the river. Some sections of the river are known for being calm and mellow, while other parts of the river require boating and rafting skills to navigate Class II to III rapids.

How to enter: Lottery opens from December to the end of January for trips launching April 15 - July 15. Applicants will be informed on February 16. Any cancelled or unclaimed trips are released to reserve online starting March 16. Trips from July 16- December 31 also become available for advanced reservation. 

Costs: A $6 non-refundable fee for <a href="https://www.recreation.gov/permits/250986" target="_blank">lottery or advanced reservations</a>. There are additional permit fees with varying prices, depending on the river segment, as well as if you camp or hike within the Navajo Nation section of the river.

The majestic Snake River ebbs and flows through the deepest river-carved gorge in North America, known as Hells Canyon. Nestled between eastern Oregon and Washington and western Idaho, Hell’s Canyon is popular for braving rapids from Class II to Class V. There are also sections of the river for relaxing float trips. With the help of binoculars, you can often spot the great blue heron or bighorn sheep. Three private launches are allowed per day with no more than 24 people per group or launch (depending on type of watercraft), as well as two commercial launches during the primary season, from the end of May through September 10th each year.

How to enter: Lottery opens in December and the application closes at the end of January. On March 16, any permits unclaimed or cancelled are released to the public and are available to reserve online. 

Costs: A non-refundable $6 fee to enter <a href="https://www.recreation.gov/permits/234625" target="_blank">the lottery</a>. If awarded a permit, there are no (additional) entrance fees.

<h1>Half Dome Cables, Yosemite California </h1>
The striking granite dome that rises about 5,000 feet above Yosemite Valley is a symbol of this National park. For many hikers and mountain climbers, reaching the top is a rite of passage. But this 10-12 hour hike isn’t for the faint of heart; it’s a strenuous trail and requires hikers to be in good physical health. The last 400 feet may seem to be the hardest part requiring the famous cables to ascend to the summit but it’s only one of the many challenges. 

How to enter: The preseason lottery is open from March 1-March 31 with around 225 permits offered each day. Daily lotteries occur from May 31- October 13 (though dates subject to change) with a two day advanced window. So if you want to hike on a Tuesday, you need to apply on Sunday and hope you get lucky. Fifty permits are usually allotted per day. 

Costs: There is a $10 non-refundable fee to partake in <a href="https://www.recreation.gov/permits/234652" target="_blank">the lottery</a>. If selected, you will incur a $10 permit fee per person for a specific day.

<h1>Grand Canyon Rafting, Arizona </h1>
Rafting down the Colorado River through the incredible Grand Canyon may be a dream come true. But you’re definitely going to need to plan in advance to have a chance at the unique view from the water. Self-guided tours, often referred to as private rafting, are available via the weighted lottery. 

Because the river is challenging and technical, the National Park Service requires that at least one person in the group has whitewater rafting experience and skills to navigate the river. 

How to enter: The lottery takes place for three weeks in February for the opportunity to choose up to 5 specific dates for the following year. If there are cancellations by winners or unclaimed trips, applicants can partake in additional lotteries. But hopefuls will need to be attentive to their email as extra lotteries have a super short window, usually two days, to enter. 

 Costs: <a href="https://www.nps.gov/grca/planyourvisit/weightedlottery.htm" target="_blank">Applying to the lottery</a> incurs a non-refundable $25 fee. If you win a launch date, you’ll be required to pay a deposit confirming your spot and will go towards covering additional expenses, including a park entrance fee and river permit per person.

<h1>Coyote Buttes North (The Wave), Utah </h1>
Coyote Buttes North is most well-known for the The Wave, an impressive geological sandstone formation, located within the 112,500-acre Paria Canyon-Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness. Permits are required to access this undeveloped area and is considered the backcountry—there are no designated trails or bathrooms. Permit-holders should be in good physical health to hike the challenging 6.4 round-trip trail. A maximum of 64 people are allowed to enter the park each day and in groups of up to six people. 

How to enter: The lottery opens on the first of each month for the chance to get a day use permit four months later. For example, if you apply during the month of April, if you “win” a permit, you’ll be given a date in August. There are two lottery systems: advanced online and walk-in. The advanced lottery awards permits for forty-eight people or 12 groups per day and up to sixteen people can get lucky in the walk-in lottery. Each person must be listed on the permit, including babies, and pay an entrance fee. 

Cost: <a href="https://www.recreation.gov/permits/274309" target="_blank">The lottery</a> costs a non-refundable $9 application fee. If you are granted a permit, the cost per person is $7.

<h1>Havasupai Falls, Arizona </h1>
Havasupai Falls is part of the Grand Canyon system in Arizona but it is technically outside the park in tribal land that belongs to the Havasupai tribe. It is a known bucket-list hike for hikers and campers who want to experience the beautiful blue water falling over the canyon. In order to hike the canyon, people are required to have a reservation of at least 3 nights, so people should be comfortable with distance hiking. 
How to enter: <a href="https://www.havasupaireservations.com/" target="_blank">The lottery</a> closes on February 1 each year, though it is closed in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

With majestic canyons, sandstone walls, and breathtaking hikes, it’s no wonder this jewel of the National Park Service was named for the promised land. 
Zion National Park in Southwest Utah is one of the most extraordinary places in the United States (and on earth). It offers adventure surrounded by towering canyons, immense sandstone walls, and amazing hikes that every American must see at least once in their lifetime.&nbsp;

<h2>Getting There</h2>
McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas is the largest airport near Zion National Park. The St. George Regional Airport is a bit closer at just 50 miles away, but prices are usually between $100 and $200 more for a round-trip ticket. Keep an eye on ticket prices leading up to your purchase, and snag some for St. George if you find a comparable deal.&nbsp;

If you’re coming from Las Vegas, rent a car for the 160-mile drive to the park. Then take off toward the mountains on I-15 for desert panoramas that will just begin to prepare you for the jaw-dropping Utah landscape you’re headed for. We recommend completing this drive during daylight. Not only will you want to take in the desert scenery, but there are also some winding roads.&nbsp;

For the best gas prices, be sure to fuel up in St. George or Hurricane, UT. It’s also advisable to buy several gallons of water before entering the park in case of emergency.

<h3>Park Entrance</h3>
At the park entrance, you’ll pay $35 per car, which gives you access to the park for seven days. For $80, you can get the America The Beautiful pass, which grants you access to all national parks in the US. If you plan to go on from Zion to other nearby parks such as Bryce Canyon or Arches, we absolutely recommend this option.

<h3>Shuttle Buses</h3>
During most of the pandemic, Zion has been implementing a <a href="https://www.nps.gov/zion/planyourvisit/zion-canyon-shuttle-system.htm">shuttle ticket system</a>. At the end of May 2021, the park eliminated this system. The shuttle is now open for anyone to ride. The only requirement is that you wear a mask! As of June 2021, the only places the buses are stopping include the visitor center, the lodge, the Grotto, Big Bend, and the Temple of Sinawava.&nbsp;

There is often a line to get on a shuttle, and on busy days, you may feel as though you’re standing in line at Walt Disney World. The line is typically worse in the morning as everyone is arriving to the park, but extra-early birds can beat the crowds. Shuttle buses begin running at 6 AM, so get in line around 5:00 AM if you’d like to be one of the first up canyon.

<h3>The Zion-Mount Carmel Tunnel</h3>
The <a href="https://www.nps.gov/zion/planyourvisit/the-zion-mount-carmel-tunnel.htm">Zion-Mt. Carmel Tunnel</a> runs between Zion Canyon and the east side of the park. Due to height limitations, this 1.1-mile tunnel cannot accommodate large vehicles in both lanes. Rangers must control the traffic flow so that oversized vehicles can drive down the center of the tunnel.&nbsp;

Therefore, vehicles larger than either 11’4” tall or 7’10” wide must pay a $15 tunnel permit fee at the park entrance station. Vehicles larger than 13’1” are completely prohibited. Also note that pedestrians and bicyclists are not allowed in the tunnel at any time.

<h2>Camping: The Ultimate Bargain</h2>
<h3>Dispersed Camping</h3>
Tent camping is one way you can cut expenses while visiting Zion National Park. You can make camp on most BLM (public) land without a fee; however, this option should only be used by those who are experienced campers.&nbsp;

If you want to camp for free, make sure you have a map and give yourself plenty of daylight to find a campsite. The tradeoff with this option is that you’ll have to devote a little more time traveling to and from the park.

<h3>Campgrounds</h3>
If you’d prefer a <a href="https://www.nps.gov/zion/planyourvisit/campgrounds-in-zion.htm">campsite</a> inside the park with more amenities, plan to book your spot early. The Watchman Campground is right by the visitor center and is the busiest campground, often selling out months in advance.&nbsp;

Additionally, the South Campground is just a bit further up the road and allows reservations up to 14 days before your trip. For a little more privacy, you can stay at the first come, first served Lava Point Campground, about an hour and twenty minutes from the south entrance of the park.

<h2>Hotels Are A Short, Beautiful Drive Away</h2>
Affordable hotels can be found in Hurricane, UT, about a 30-minute drive from the park. Prices can be as low as $60 in the off season, and $70 in the high season. The drive is beautiful; just be sure to budget time to get through the park’s gates.

Springdale is the closest town to Zion’s south entrance, but it tends to be a bit pricier. Keep your eyes on hotel prices as you prepare for your trip, and again, snag something if you find a comparable deal. There’s a shuttle that runs between Springdale and the park, so parking doesn’t have to be such a pain if you stay in town.Stock up on food in advance 
To stay on budget, you’ll want to stock up on food and water at a grocery store (pick up a cooler and ice if you’re packing perishables of course). Stop in either Las Vegas or St. George for these items. There are also several restaurants and small markets just outside the park in Springdale, but these will be more expensive.&nbsp;

Whether you spend the day wading through a river canyon or scaling the side of a mountain, there is no more rewarding way to soak up Zion’s unreal landscape. Plus, hiking is free! Here are our top recommendations in the park.

<h3>Pa’rus Trail</h3>
<ul><li>Section: South side (of the canyon)
</li><li>Level of difficulty: Easy
</li></ul>
The 3.5-mile Pa’rus Trail is great for bicyclists and for those who want a fairly flat trail that will still give them plenty of stunning views. Additionally, there is only one trail in Zion that pet owners can take their animals, and this is it!

<h3>Watchman Trail</h3>
<ul><li>Section: South side (of the canyon)
</li><li>Level of difficulty: Moderate
</li></ul>
If you’re wanting to do something a little more difficult than the Pa’rus Trail without having to enter the canyon via shuttle, try this trail. In 3.3 miles, it rewards you with great views of the Watchman, the lower canyon, and Springdale.

<h3>Canyon Overlook Trail</h3>
<ul><li>Section: East side
</li><li>Level of difficulty: Moderate
</li></ul>
The Canyon Overlook Trail is a beautiful one to watch either sunrise or sunset from. It’s a short jaunt that clocks in at just one mile round-trip, and it leads you up to spectacular views of lower Zion Canyon.&nbsp;

Just be sure to head there a little earlier than your intended hike start time as you may have to park down the road. Parking at the trailhead is very limited.

<h3>Taylor Creek Trail</h3>
<ul><li>Section: Kolob Canyons
</li><li>Level of difficulty: Moderate
</li></ul>
If you’re interested in getting away from the crowds Zion is known for, take an hour drive to the Kolab Canyons section of the park and try the 5-mile Taylor Creek Trail.

<h3>Emerald Pools + The Kayenta Trail</h3>
<ul><li>Section: Zion Canyon
</li><li>Level of difficulty: Moderate
</li></ul>
Connect the Emerald Pools Trails with the Kayenta Trail for one of the easier hikes up canyon. This route is perfect for families or for those who are a little tired from hiking in the morning. There are a few different ways to do this combination depending on which Emerald Pools Trails you take, but the longest way clocks in at just about three miles.

<h3>The Narrows</h3>
<ul><li>Section: Zion Canyon
</li><li>Level of difficulty: Strenuous
</li></ul>
You can hike the Virgin River up to Big Spring (3.6 miles one-way), wading through the water as you stare up at the high walls enclosing you. The trail is listed as strenuous because it involves climbing over some rocks, but there’s little elevation gain.&nbsp;

Some choose to rent gear such as walking sticks and water shoes from outfitters in town. If you want to save some money, however, just bring along the trekking poles you’re using to hike with anyways.

Note that there’s always a risk of flash floods on this trail. Keep your eye on the flood forecast posted around the park and turn around if you see the following:

<ul><li>Deteriorating weather conditions
</li><li>Thunder or a buildup of clouds
</li><li>Sudden changes in water clarity (from clear to muddy)
</li></ul>
<h3>Angel’s Landing</h3>
<ul><li>Section: Zion Canyon
</li><li>Level of difficulty: Strenuous
</li></ul>
This is Zion’s most famous hike, which ends with a crawl across the spine of a mountain to a view meant for angels. If you’re afraid of heights, stop on the trail at Scout Lookout, which provides views almost as good as those farther on.&nbsp;

This trail is often very crowded – by the end of the effort, you’ll be best friends with the people climbing the trail around you. Bring extra water as the set of steep switchbacks on the trail will have you needing more than you might think.

<h2>Other Things You Need To Know</h2>
<h3>Closed Hikes</h3>
Due to rockfall in 2019, a few hikes are closed: Weeping Rock, Hidden Canyon, and Observation Point via the canyon floor. These trails are bound to be closed for another decade or so (if they ever reopen).

<h3>Cyanobacteria</h3>
The Virgin River (and any water sources coming from the river) is currently experiencing a <a href="https://www.nps.gov/zion/planyourvisit/toxic-cyanobacteria-bloom-in-the-virgin-river-and-the-streams-of-zion-national-park.htm">toxic cyanobacteria bloom</a>. Even though the park is monitoring it regularly, much is unknown regarding its effects. If you choose to go into the water, avoid getting it in your eyes, ears, nose, mouth, or in any open wounds.

Additionally, do not let dogs drink from or get into the river as the algae has been found to be fatal to our furry friends.

But there's plenty of natural beauty to go around, and many state parks offer outdoor experiences that shouldn't be overlooked. State parks tend to have lower entrance fees and more manageable crowds than the marquee-name national parks, plus there’s the added bonus of not being affected by pesky government shutdowns. Here are 10 fabulous state parks to get you started.
<h1>1. Custer State Park: Custer, South Dakota </h1>

A free-roaming herd of 1,500 bison is the main attraction at this park in the scenic Black Hills, but there’s plenty more wildlife to be spotted along its 18-mile loop road, including pronghorns, bighorn sheep, and even feral burros. Needles Highway, a popular 14-mile <a href="https://www.budgettravel.com/article/us-scenic-byways" rel="noopener" target="_blank">scenic drive through the park</a>, is dotted with needle-shaped rock formations, two tunnels, and sweeping views of evergreen forests and lush meadows. <h1>2. Kartchner Caverns State Park: Benson, Arizona

Home to a 21-foot stalactite that ranks as the third-longest in the world, this multi-room cave located 45 miles southwest of Tucson has only been open to the public since 1999. Kartchner Caverns is a living cave, meaning that its formations are still growing, and the park offers two guided tours that explore several different areas. The park is also a designated International Dark Sky Park, so it’s great for stargazing. Central Arkansas probably isn’t the first place that comes to mind for a mountaintop adventure, but that’s just what Petit Jean State Park offers. Perched atop the 1200ft Petit John Mountain, this park has 20 miles of hiking trails that feature captivating geological formations such as giant sandstone boulders, stone arches, rock shelters, and box canyons. The park’s historic Mather Lodge, a rustic, cozy accommodation built of logs and stone, is a great option if you’re staying a few days. <h1>4. Anza-Borrego State Park: San Diego County, California

A remote and rugged landscape located in southeast California’s Colorado desert, Anza-Borrego State Park has 600,000 acres of varied terrain including badlands and slot canyons. The popular Borrego Palm Canyon trail takes hikers on a rocky stroll to an almost surreal oasis filled with California palms. When you’re visiting, save time to check out the collection of more than 130 giant metal creatures built by sculptor Ricardo Breceda in the nearby town of Borrego Springs. <h1>5. Dead Horse Point State Park: Moab, Utah

It’s not the Grand Canyon, but it was a suitable stand-in for filming the final scene of the classic film Thelma & Louise. In other words, the views from Dead Horse State Park are fantastic. Just 25 miles from Moab, this park sits 2,000 feet above a gooseneck in the Colorado River and looks out over Canyonlands National Park. Visitors can pick their favorite view from one of eight different lookout points along the seven-mile rim trail. <h1>6. Watkins Glen State Park: Watkins Glen, New York</h1>
With steep, plant-covered cliffs, small caves, and misty waterfalls, this state park in New York’s Finger Lakes region feels a little like stepping into a fairy tale. Visit in spring, summer, or fall, when you can hike the Gorge Trail, a two-mile journey that descends 400 feet, past 19 waterfalls into an idyllic narrow valley. Visitors can also enjoy the beauty from above on one of the dog-friendly rim trails. Season runs mid-may to early November. <h1>7. Tettegouche State Park: Silver Bay, Minnesota
 </h1>
Eight great state parks dot the 150-mile stretch of Highway 61 along the north shore of Lake Superior in Minnesota, but Tettegouche stands out for its scenic hiking opportunities through forests, past waterfalls, and along the shoreline. The easy Shovel Point trail takes hikers along jagged, lakeside cliffs to a dramatic lookout over Lake Superior. There are also three loop trails featuring waterfalls. Drive just 50 miles northeast of the <a href="https://www.budgettravel.com/video/las-vegas" rel="noopener" target="_blank">bustling Las Vegas strip</a>, and you’ll find a peaceful valley filled with dramatic red-sandstone formations that take on the appearance of flames on sunny days. The popular Atlatl Rock trail features a giant boulder balanced on a sandstone outcrop 50 feet above the ground. Climb its metal staircase to see the prominent ancient petroglyphs. Spanish for “mountain of gold,” Montana de Oro gets its name from the golden wildflowers that cover the area each spring, but you can find colorful views year-round on the seven miles of rocky, undeveloped coastline that comprise the western edge of this state park in <a href="https://www.budgettravel.com/article/24-hours-in-morro-bay-ca">California’s central coast region</a>. The 4.6-mile Bluff Trail is a great way to see a large swath of the beaches, tide pools, and natural bridges in the park, or you can hike the Hazard and Valencia Peak trails for summit views. Parks on Road Trip #1

Day 1: <a href="https://stateparks.utah.gov/parks/antelope-island/">Antelope Island State Park</a>

After entering the park, hike the 1-mile Buffalo Point Trail, stopping to soak in views of Antelope Island and the Great Salt Lake. Once you’ve worked up a sweat, head down to take a dip at Bridger Bay Beach. After you’re done bobbing around in the salty water, drive the rest of the park's road. Be sure to keep your eyes peeled for large animals such as bison, pronghorn, mule deer, and bighorn sheep.

Day 2: <a href="https://stateparks.utah.gov/parks/wasatch-mountain/">Wasatch Mountain State Park</a>

Distance from Antelope Island: 1 hour, 30 minutes

Hike the 6.1-mile trail to Lake Mary via Catherine Pass. Just be sure to get an early start and have a backup plan for parking as this is a popular trail. If you’re comfortable with adding on less than a mile, take two detours to visit Lake Catherine and Lake Martha while you’re on the trail.&nbsp;

Day 3: <a href="https://stateparks.utah.gov/parks/millsite/">Millsite State Park</a>

Distance from Wasatch Mountain: 3 hours

Bring your water vessel of choice for a phenomenal day of paddling on the beautiful waters of the Millsite Reservoir. With stunning views all around, you won’t want to get out of the water.

Parks on Road Trip #2

Venture to another planet on your first stop of this road trip. Goblin Valley State Park transports you to Mars as you hike among astonishing sandstone formations. Explore the Valley of Goblins, a free-roaming area without trails. Once you’re ready for a slight change in scenery, head to the campground with a frisbee (or rent one) to play on one of the most unique 9-hole disc golf courses you’ll ever find.

Day 2: <a href="https://stateparks.utah.gov/parks/dead-horse/">Dead Horse Point State Park</a>

Distance from Goblin Valley: 1 hour, 45 minutes

This often-forgotten Moab state park offers similar views to Canyonlands National Park with far fewer visitors to share them with. Complete the 5-mile loop on the rim to hit as many scenic overlooks as possible.

Day 3, Part 1: <a href="https://stateparks.utah.gov/parks/edge-of-the-cedars/">Edge of the Cedars State Park</a>

Distance from Dead Horse Point: 2 hours

At this park, you’ll step away from the focus on natural resources and turn your attention towards history and culture instead. Edge of the Cedars State Park includes a museum housing fascinating exhibits such as an incredible collection of Ancestral Puebloan pottery. After you’ve finished exploring the museum, gain a better understanding of how people used to live there by wandering the ruins outside. You even have the opportunity to enter a 1,000-year-old kiva!

Day 3, Part 2: <a href="https://stateparks.utah.gov/parks/goosenecks/">Goosenecks State Park</a>

Distance from Edge of the Cedars: 1 hour

After you’ve finished exploring Edge of the Cedars, take the short drive to Goosenecks State Park. Goosenecks is an interesting park in that it does not hold any hiking or biking trails within its boundaries. This means it’s best to simply enjoy the park via an overlook accessed by your vehicle. Bring a picnic to extend your time spent watching the San Juan River carving the rock below.

A 2-mile trail combining the Petrified Forest Trail and the Sleeping Rainbows Trail will take you through lava flows and oodles of petrified wood.

Day 2: <a href="https://stateparks.utah.gov/parks/kodachrome-basin/">Kodachrome Basin State Park</a>

Distance from Escalante Petrified Forest: 1 hour

Explore the towering spires of Kodachrome Basin State Park by foot! The park has put together a geocache challenge that takes you on four trails. GPS coordinates for this challenge are found on Kodachrome Basin’s <a href="https://stateparks.utah.gov/parks/kodachrome-basin/kodachrome-penny-press-geocache-challenge/">website</a>. Save the geocache located on the Cool Cave loop for last so you can traverse the rest of the 6-mile Panorama Trail loop if you have the time (and energy).

Day 3: <a href="https://stateparks.utah.gov/parks/coral-pink/">Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park</a>

Distance from Kodachrome Basin: 2 hours

Bring along (or rent) a sled or snowboard to shred some sand in this wild landscape of sand dunes. Once you’re ready for a change of activity, go explore the dunes on foot! Just be sure to stay aware of ATVs as off-roading is a popular activity in the park.

Day 4: <a href="https://stateparks.utah.gov/parks/snow-canyon/">Snow Canyon State Park</a>

Distance from Coral Pink Sand Dunes: 1 hour, 30 minutes

Finish up your road trip with a long day of two hikes at Snow Canyon State Park. The first is the 4.8-mile Snow Canyon Overlook Trail, one that rewards you with a remarkable view at the end. The second is the 2.3-mile Lava Tube Trail, one offering the rare experience of meandering through–you guessed it–lava tubes!&nbsp;

Outside exploration close to home became a popular alternative for conventional vacations this year providing a safe and creative chance to rediscover (or even discover for the first time) our own backyards. While travel may look different, there are plenty of safe and distanced ways to find fun and adventure. 
The Midwest is a treasure trove of unique experiences for every age with a range of exciting opportunities and beautiful landscapes. The Midwest is known for four very distinct seasons and many of the experiences can be enjoyed with a whole new perspective based on season (though some are strictly seasonal) These ten destinations in six Midwest states provide a range of options …from National parks to local U-pick farms, avoiding indoor crowds opting instead for wide open outdoor spaces. 
<h1>1. Indiana Dunes National Park, Indiana. </h1>
This beach in the middle of the country has a surprising ocean vibe with opportunities to hike, swim, camp, fish, and bird watch. The park offers the “3 dune challenge”, a hike involving a 1.5 mile trail with a 552 vertical feet climb (equivalent of 55 stories) to the 3 highest dunes in the park…through sand!! The views are worth the climb and completion of the hike is an accomplishment in itself. Admission is 7-12$ per vehicle.

<h1>2. Matthiessen and Starved Rock State Parks, Illinois.</h1>
These parks, within a few miles of each other, offer trails that lead to spectacular displays of bluffs and canyons highlighted with scenic overlooks, rock formations and waterfalls. In the summertime, the waterfalls provide a cool respite from the hike and in the winter ice falls form and are climbable. Admission is free.

<h1>3. Johnson’s Shut Ins and Elephant Rocks State Parks, Missouri. </h1>
These parks, also within a few miles of each other, are both truly hidden gems. Johnsons Shut Ins is essentially a natural water park with chutes, slides and waterfalls as well as swimming holes and rocks to climb. This adventure is truly one of a kind – a stunning destination to see and experience. 

Elephant Rocks State Park is made of giant elephantine boulders that are available to climb and explore. The park provides an accessible trail. Both are free.

<h1>4. Maquoketa Caves State Park, Iowa. </h1>
A unique park in Iowa with 13 caves suited for different levels of exploration, from caves that are lighted and large enough to walk through on a boardwalk…to small caves well suited for spelunking. The park provides hiking trails through rocky canyons and a spectacular natural bridge.

*For added fun, 61 Drive In Theater (just miles from the caves) is a fun way to end the day…a throwback to time gone by, the drive in usually offers current double features, a playground for children before the movie, a concession stand and a train ride. 

The caves are free. The drive in ranges in price from 7-9$ for children and adults.

<h1>5. Drive the Great River Road. </h1>
A natural scenic byway passing through 10 states along the 3000 mile Mississippi River. In Illinois, a day’s drive might start in the quaint artsy town of Galena to enjoy the vibrant main street shopping and eateries. After which, drive along the river to Palisades State Park to hike the bluffed overlook enjoying the views. Continue with a stop in the Quad Cities, the only place where the mighty Mississippi runs east to west instead of north to south. The Quad Cities are home to John Deere world headquarters and pavilion where construction and agricultural machinery is often available to view on their outdoor terrace. A paddlewheel riverboat cruise is reminiscent of simpler times depicted by Mark Twain in his life and writings on the Mississippi and a perfect way to enjoy the third longest river in the world. End the evening on the sky bridge with a sweet corn flavored ice cream watching the sunset . All free with exception of the cruise (and the ice cream.)

<h1>6. Henry Doorly Zoo, Nebraska. </h1>
This zoo was a wonderful Midwest surprise (similar to the inland beach), as this zoo is constantly ranked as one of the best on the world and is right here in the middle of the country. The zoo has a variety of specialized exhibits including an aquarium, butterfly enclosure and creatures of the night display. The animal population ranges from polar bears and penguins to gorillas, rhinos, elephants, giraffes and mesmerizing jellyfish. Price is $18.95-$25.95 for a child or adult.

<h1>7. Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin. </h1>
While this one may be more crowded and a bit pricier – it most definitely deserves a spot in the top ten. From idyllic natural scenery to thrilling water adventures, the Dells is a must see destination. Self proclaimed water park capital of the world, the dells offer water sports, waterslides, museums, amusement parks, and the original duck boat ride – which takes passengers from land to sea on the same craft. The majestic scenery of the sandstone bluffs and the opportunity to explore natural beauty of Witches Gulch or Devil’s Lake State Park is not to be missed. Prices vary depending on activity.

<h1>8. Monticello Iowa Canoe Company, Iowa</h1>
 For an afternoon of canoeing, kayaking, or tubing down the Maquoketa River through beautiful bluffs – truly a memorable way to enjoy a sunny summer day. The company provides a bus ride or covid friendly van ride for small groups or families to the beginning of the float and collects the rented equipment at the end of the float leaving only relaxation time for the floaters. 3-6 hours float for 15-30$ depending on canoe, kayak, or tube rental.

<h1>9. Sky Tours Zipline, Iowa. </h1>
This most unique adventure combines adventure with history and nature. A guided tour through the ruins of an entertainment venue from the early 1900’s including hiking through the natural overgrowth and nine ziplining opportunities.

74$ for the ziplining tour lasting approximately 2 hours. 

*To extend the day’s adventures, nearby in Galena Illinois is Chestnut Mountain which is home to one of the Midwest’s “alpine” slides providing approximately 2000 feet of downhill fun! An afternoon to relax and enjoy nature’s harvests is a perfect way to pass the day. MID-WEST 
Kansas

In Northeast Kansas, the <a href="https://www.travelks.com/ksbyways/glacial-hills/">Glacial Hills Scenic Byways</a> runs through a distinct landscape named for the rolling hills and the rock-strewn valleys. Its name reflects the receding ice, which left highly fertile farmland.

In Southern Illinois, the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.enjoyillinois.com/explore/listing/shawnee-national-forest">Shawnee National Forest</a> is a hiker’s paradise, seated between the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers and with paths meandering through canyons under forest canopies.&nbsp;Its crown jewel, <a href="https://www.enjoyillinois.com/explore/listing/garden-of-the-gods">Garden of the Gods</a>, overlooks views of towering sandstone outcroppings formed millions of years ago. In the central part of the state, the <a href="https://www.enjoyillinois.com/explore/listing/peorias-grandview-drive-worlds-most-beautiful-drive">Grandview Drive</a>&nbsp;is considered to be one of Illinois’ most scenic routes.&nbsp;

Indiana

An hour from Indianapolis, <a href="https://www.in.gov/dnr/parklake/2988.htm">Brown County State Park</a> resembles the Great Smoky Mountains but Indiana’s largest park is fall&nbsp;color hot spot, with nearly 20 miles of tree-lined roads and many scenic vistas overlooking miles of uninterrupted forestland. The 2,300-acre <a href="https://www.in.gov/dnr/parklake/2976.htm">O’Bannon Woods State Park</a> is surrounded by beauty located within the foothills of Southern Indiana and bordering the Ohio and Blue rivers.

Iowa 
<a href="https://www.iowadnr.gov/places-to-go/state-forests/yellow-river-state-forest">Yellow River State Forest</a> in Harpers Ferry makes for a good fall jaunt. Its Backpack Trail was named Iowa’s best hiking trail by Outdoor magazine in 1996, while Paint Creek Unit is quite the recreational hiking loop. Or catch some fall color via kayaking or canoeing on <a href="https://upperiowariver.org/recreation/">The Upper Iowa River</a> in Northeast Iowa that can be accessed at Kendallville, Bluffton and Decorah.&nbsp;

Minnesota

The <a href="https://www.exploreminnesota.com/profile/north-shore-all-american-scenic-drive/2336">North Shore “All-American” Scenic Drive</a> stretches 154 miles along the shore of Lake Superior is aligned with yellow aspen, birch trees and scarlet maples. And the <a href="https://www.exploreminnesota.com/profile/minnesota-great-river-road-national-scenic-byway/2334">Minnesota Great River Road</a> follows the Mississippi River and passes through Chippewa National Forest, Itasca State Park and Frontenac and Great River Bluffs state parks. 

North Dakota

The Rendezvous Region&nbsp;in northeast North Dakota is home to the wooded&nbsp;Pembina&nbsp;Gorge and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.parkrec.nd.gov/pembina-gorge-state-recreation-area">Pembina&nbsp;Gorge State Recreation Area</a>; hike on marked trails&nbsp;or&nbsp;rent a kayak to paddle along the Pembina River.&nbsp;Next, head west on the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ndtourism.com/articles/turtle-mountain-scenic-byway">Turtle Mountain Scenic Byway</a>&nbsp;and stop at Coghlan Castle and&nbsp;<a href="http://www.parkrec.nd.gov/parks/lmsp/lmsp.html">Lake Metigoshe State Park</a> in the Turtle Mountains along the U.S/Canadian border.

Oklahoma 
The <a href="http://www.talimenascenicdrive.com/">Talimena National Scenic Byway</a> is a 50-mile drive partly through southeastern Oklahoma and touches upon Winding Stair Mountain in the Ouachita National Forest. Also in this region, <a href="https://www.travelok.com/state-parks/beavers-bend-state-park">Beavers Bend State Park</a> is adorned with forests of pine and hardwood plus rugged terrain and waterways for seeing on foot.&nbsp;&nbsp;
South Dakota
 <a href="https://gfp.sd.gov/parks/detail/custer-state-park/">Custer State Park</a> is not only known for its free-roaming resident bison -- it also produces vibrant fall foliage at every turn. The Needles Highway has views of the Cathedral Spires, among birch, aspen and ponderosa pines while the Wildlife Loop leads towards&nbsp;Mt. Coolidge,&nbsp;where burr oak tree leaves burst in orange. On the northern edge of the Black Hills, <a href="https://visitspearfish.com/things-to-do/spearfish-canyon">Spearfish Canyon</a> offers waterfall views from a spruce, pine, aspen, birch and oak tree forest.
